Windows 10 start menu stuck in full screen

Q. After upgrading from 8 to 10, I had one nice day of the start menu. Then, on the second day, as I went to shut down the computer, my finger stuttered near the power options on the start menu before shutting down, and for some reason, the start menu went full screen.

I have not been able to get it back to the normal start menu. I have found the start menu settings and toggled the full-screen option off and on repeatedly, even tried shutting down and restarting after each change, but the start menu remains stuck at full screen. I have removed all of the tiles from the Start menu, still no change.

(Worse yet, I cannot go to my desktop AT ALL now – at least with Win 8 I could still toggle to the desktop with Alt-Tab or the start key. All Alt-Tab does now is a toggle between the full-screen start menu and running programs.)

I’ve searched high and low for 24 hours for a solution to this problem. Please help!
